MoreHighly regarded as Galena's oldest and most historic building, the Downing House is a famous tourist attraction in Galena, Illinois. Constructed largely using limestone in 1826-27 by John Dowling, this single-pen style building served as a trading post, along with Dowling's living quarters. Post his death, the building was abandoned and left dilapidated for several decades. However, in the late 1960s, William McCauley bought it and refurnished it, opening it to the public in 1970. Today, the house is a beautiful museum with visitors coming from all over the US to check out this historic site. Less
