MoreThe Halfway House started its roots over 125 years ago as a rest stop for people and horses traveling to and from Noxon and Troy (previously called Lake City). Bull Lake is generally considered the halfway point between the Clark Fork and Kootenai Rivers. Strategically located along the "Great Northern Tote Road" were four rest stops where teams could be watered, fed, and spend the night. Early documents suggest that there were barns or sheds next to early homesteads that were designated for settlers to stay and feed their horses. The Halfway Horse Feeding and Rest Station was located near Payne Creek which is the creek running beside the current establishment. In addition to being a horse feeding station, Mr. O.F. Payne was issued a Missoula County Liquor License in 1891 for an establishment called the "25 Mile House" that catered to the people driving the horses and to the construction crews in the area. When the Great Northern Railway crews moved further west, business declined significantly and it is believed that O.F. Payne focused on his farming and probably kept the saloon open only for local homesteaders. The 25 Mile House closed for good in 1894. Years later, in 1936, Harry Tallmadge opened "Tallmadge Service Station" as a small store and in 1945 expanded to accommodate a bar.
