As Alpena flourished as a lumber town in the 19th Century, a small light house was first established at this site in 1875. This was replaced by a pyramidal tower in 1877 before the current Alpena Light was built in its place in 1914. Originally painted black, the lighthouse got its iconic red color in 1950. Today, the popular lighthouse is dearly known as "Little Red" or "Sputnik" among locals and makes for a stunning landmark of Alpena. It is best viewed from Alpena's marina.
