MoreOverlooking the confluence of two water bodies, Fort Ticonderoga played an important part in the Battle of Carillon and the American Revolutionary War. Owing to its strategic location, the colony that controlled the fort gained access to the waterways and trade routes that were located between the French and British American colonies. This is the site where American troops got the first taste of a major success in their pursuit of independence. The star-shaped Vauban-style defense structure was nearly damaged by the British after they were defeated and had to evacuate the fort. It was bought by William Ferris Pell, a local merchant and was renovated by his grandson, Stephen H.P. Pell and his wife. It has been a tourist attraction since 1909 and is now a museum. Decked with artifacts and archaeological relics, the complex also features intricately landscaped gardens and a corn maze. Less
