MoreThe Waterloo State Recreation Area is sprawled over 20,500 acres (8,296 hectares) of natural wetlands and is Michigan's third biggest park. Geologically, the ebbing glaciers of the Ice Age created quagmires (bogs), kettle holes (water bodies) and soil debris known as moraines. This park has more than 10 lakes including the Mill Lake, Crooked Lake and Sugarloaf Lake. To enjoy water-based activities, head to the campground at the beach or one of the piers at the lake for fishing. The marked tracks for biking and hiking stretch for more than 50 miles (80.47 kilometers). Winters bring the joy of sledding and cross-country skiing through difficult, but incredibly beautiful, trails. The balance of the ecosystem is maintained with activities for both wildlife watchers and hunters, as the park is home to animals and birds like woodcock, squirrel, deer, quail, rabbit and turkey. For the best experience, start your journey at the visitor's center, pore over maps to acquaint yourself with the various trails, and hire a recreational vehicle (RV) to enjoy fun days out. Less
