A stirring tribute to a warrior of the Oglala Lakota tribe, this colossal structure is to depict the legendary hero gloriously directing a horse. Having fought valiantly in many ancient battles, Crazy Horse, the warrior, is much known for having led attacks against several miners in Montana, the Dakotas, and Wyoming. Due to bad weather, funding and other factors, the memorial has faced many a challenge in its ongoing construction. The project began in 1948 and apart from the monument, is deemed to house the Indian Museum of North America and the Native American Cultural Center. Backdropped by the mighty Mount Rushmore, this memorial was commissioned by Henry Standing Bear and sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski. Touted to be one of the largest sculptures in the world once completed, the Crazy Horse Memorial still has a long way to go.
