The story dates back to 1892, when Mercy Brown was the third victim of a mysterious disease that was consuming the family. The locals, suspecting a vampire manifestation, mutilated and burned the corpse thinking it would stop the plague. Though nothing changed, and the mystery ailment was later identified as tuberculosis, the incident remains one of the best such documented ones in the country. Less
