The university was founded in 1900 by steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie as Carnegie Technical School. Carnegie's original goal was to start a trade school for the working class people of the city. In 1965, following a merger with Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, it became what it is today, Carnegie Mellon University. The university is located on a picturesque campus that sprawls over 140 acres (57 hectares) and features is a mix of Beaux-Arts and modern architectural style of structures.   Campus grounds were interesting, but the grafitti was offputting. I was on bike, so I saw a lot in 30 min. If on foot, allow 2 hours...it's a big campus. More

  Beautiful grounds and outstanding architecture, CMU is definitely worth a visit. Phipps Conservatory, affiliated with the campus, is enough alone to make the trek! More
