Founded in 1855, it was initially called the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan and went through a series of title changes till 1964 when its current name was proposed. It was the first to have courses on telecommunication, hospitality, supply chain management and packaging. Its massive campus is nestled on river banks of Red Cedar and is spread across 5200 acres (2104.37 hectares) of which only less than a half are developed. It comprises of 538 building which includes academic blocks, agriculture buildings and hostels. The North Campus is the oldest part of the university and contains historic structures such as Cowles House, Beaumont Tower, W. J. Beal Botanical Garden and the MSU Museum. While the South Campus has the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, MSU Horticulture Gardens, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and Spartan Stadium.
