MoreEstablished in 2000, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary preserves more than 116 shipwrecks of historical significance. The shipwrecks date from side-wheeler 19th Century CE wooden ships to the steel-hull 20th Century CE steam ships. The area encompassing this entire space extends to 11000 square kilometers (4247.1237 square miles). The sanctuary exists to ensure conservation and protection of these shipwrecks so as to enhance the rich maritime heritage. The fresh, turquoise water of Lake Huron wonderfully preserves these shipwrecks, which can be explored through the heritage trail offered at the center. Less
