MoreOne of Portland's most significant heritage sights in the heart of the city's Arts District, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House has been standing at Congress Street since its construction in 1786. Originally built by celebrated Army General Peleg Wadsworth, who resided in this house with his family until 1807 when he moved to Hiram, Maine. Nearly two decades later, his grandson, Henry Wadsworth-Longfellow, grew up in the house before becoming one of the most famous American poets of all time. The family's last member donated the house to the Maine Historical Society upon her death in 1901. Its renovated avatar is a great specimen of Federal architecture.
