Ernest Augustus. On 23 April 1799, Ernest Augustus was created Duke of Cumberland and Teviotdale and Earl of Armagh by his father the king. With a seat in the House of Lords, he took an interest in politics. Ernest held radical Tory views, and soon became a leader of the right of the party, he opposed Catholic emancipation and the Reform Act.
