Donatello , orig. Donato di Niccolò, (born c. 1386, Florence—died Dec. 13, 1466, Florence), Italian sculptor active in Florence. He learned stone carving from the sculptors of the Florence Cathedral ( c. 1400), and in 1404 joined the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti. He drew his inspiration from Classical and medieval sources.
