As the sun rose on 25 April 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers faced their first major battle of World War I. They fought with endurance, courage, ingenuity, good humour, and mateship – what we’ve come to know as the ANZAC spirit. On ANZAC Day, we honour their legacy and that of all who have followed in their footsteps.
The Australian War Memorial is open to the public. Visitors require timed tickets to enter the Memorial, and also to attend the daily Last Post Ceremony at 4:30 pm in the Commemorative Area. Access to the Memorial entrance and visitor carpark is via Fairbairn Avenue. Book your free ticket. School and school aged group bookings.
An individual's story is told, and the Ode is recited by Australian Defence Force personnel. The ceremony ends with the sounding of the Last Post. From February to November the Last Post Ceremony includes Australia's Federation Guard (on the first and third Wednesday of each month). The Last Post Ceremony is an increasingly popular public event.
