Chicago had a Blues tradition from the 20’s when the post-WWI migration from the countryside to the cities brought the Blues northwards. Tampa Red and his drinking buddy Big Bill Broonzy were at the centre of the Blues scene on the South-side from the late 20s into the 40s, running an informal ‘labour exchange’ out of Red’s apartment where newly arrived players could find out about gigs.
