Beckley, city, seat (1850) of Raleigh county, southern West Virginia, U.S., approximately 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Charleston. The first settlement was established by Gen. Alfred Beckley in 1838, but the city’s growth dates from 1890, with the start of commercial shipments of smokeless coal.

May 7, 2024 · Tourism, technology, and transportation thrive here amid three national parks in the very center of the Eastern U.S. But perhaps more than a great place to work, Beckley is an ideal place to live. A low crime rate (West Virginia has enjoyed the nation’s lowest crime rate for a half century) attracts many of our new residents.
