Frankfurt am Main (/ ˈ f r æ ŋ k f ər t /; German: [ˈfʁaŋkfʊʁt ʔam ˈmaɪn] ⓘ; lit. "Frank ford on the Main") is the most populous city in the German state of Hesse.
