Lewes Priory was founded by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey and his wife Gundrada, probably in 1081, following their visit to the Priory of Cluny in Burgundy in 1077. [5] The dedication of the new Priory to St Pancras followed from the presence of a pre-existing Saxon shrine to that saint on the site.

Built to remember and commemorate the lives of the 55 former pupils who lost their lives during World War Two.The building is an official War Memorial and is reported to be the only Chapel in the UK built at a state funded school post the 1944 Education Act. It was built entirely with funds raised by the school over an 18 year period.
The school name was changed in 1969 with the arrival of the comprehensive system to Priory School, Lewes. The Chapel has its own Board of Trustees and is a registered charity. The Trustees role is to ensure the Trust's Vision is implemented, working in partnership with the Priory School Lewes Board of Governors.
