Roberts is the son of actress Roberta "Bobbi" Jordan (née Barlett; 1937–2012) and screenwriter and film producer Robert Samuel Jordan, who left the family when Roberts was 3 years old. His stepfather was television screenwriter William "Bill" Jacobson (1919–2011), whom his mother married on October 23, 1968.
Robert Jordan passed away from a rare blood disease, amyloidosis, in 2007, before The Wheel of Time series was complete. As a result, the final 3 books in the series, (Books 12-14) were completed by fantasy author Brandon Sanderson , who was selected for the job by Harriet McDougal, Robert Jordan's wife and editor, after he passed away.
