Audio. On this day in 1847, Charles and George Merriam of Springfield published the first edition of The American Dictionary of the English Language. Four years earlier, the brothers had decided to take a major risk. The great lexicographer Noah Webster had just died, leaving behind a large stock of expensive, unsold dictionaries.
The vast majority of this collection consists of letters written to George and Charles Merriam by those involved in updating and revising the various editions of Webster’s dictionary. There are a few family letters, copies of letters written by the brothers, and financial and legal documents.

Port Greville is a rural community in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. It is home of the Age of Sail Museum of maritime history. Port Greville was the location of the construction of many sailing ships used in trade mainly with the American New England states.
