Apr 29, 2019 · The zoo at Chapultepec park opened in 1927 and is named after its founder, biologist Alfonso L. Herrera. The zoo facilities were completely remodeled between 1992 and 1994. It is home to almost 2000 animals of some 250 species, of which 130 are native to Mexico.
Spread across 17 hectares in the first section of Chapultepec Forest, the zoo is divided into seven distinct areas, each replicating different climatic and vegetal conditions. These include a desert, grasslands, a coastal strip, a tundra, an aviary, a temperate forest, and a tropical forest.
The Chapultepec Zoo is divided into two main areas of tropical forests, where we can find species like the jaguar and the gorilla, and the savanna regions, where we find the lion, giraffes and rhinos and other species. It also has a panda and snake exhibit area, a butterfly zoo, and other permanent exhibits that complement the visit.
