In 1979 while performing a stunt, he actually flew off his bike into a parked car. The actor was badly injured, but it didn't put him off giving the show his all.

Sep 29, 1999 · CHiPs. CHiPs is a drama series that aired on NBC from 1977 to 1983 that followed the lives of two motorcycle police officers of the California Highway Patrol, Baker and Ponch. CHiPs followed the adventures of two hunky California Highway patrolmen, Francis "Ponch" Poncherello (Erik Estrada) and Jon Baker (Larry Wilcox).
The cast includes: Ponch, Jon, Getraer, Baricza, Grossman, Turner, Clark, and Harlan. Season 6 (1982-83) Just before the theme, a “this week on CHiPs ” type clip is shown. The theme has a new video track (including shots of Nelson and Getraer). There is more than one theme for this season.
