Piers Gaveston. Piers Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall (ca. 1284 – 19 June 1312) was the favourite of King Edward II of England. Their contemporaries thought that the relationship between the two men was homosexual. The nobles of England grew jealous and angry as Gaveston rose in power. In 1312, civil war erupted.

Piers Gaveston, Earl of Cornwall (c. 1284–1312) was the favourite and presumed lover of King Edward II . He was the son of Arnaud de Gabaston, a Gascon knight from Gabaston in south-western France who had served Edward's father, King Edward I. Elevated to the peerage as Earl of Cornwall by Edward II in 1307, he was an influential figure in the first years of the king's reign. Gaveston's brief but turbulent career culminated in his murder in 1312. Over the course of seven centuries, the image of Gaveston has been reduced to little more than a parody of the historical figure.
