The Drowning Pool sees Paul Newman returning as Lew Harper, the private detective created by novelist Ross MacDonald nine years after his first screen outing in the Jack Smight directed Harper. The movie begins with the easygoing Harper, who commonly prowls the suburbs of his hometown of Los Angeles, travelling to New Orleans.
More generally, The Drowning Pool also displays a markedly more earnest and extensive interest than Harper in the theme of dysfunctional family dynamics. While this element of the film is never less than sensitively written and played, it also renders the narrative’s final fifteen minutes a somewhat ungainly, narrative resolution-focused affair.

This time an old girlfriend, Iris Devereaux ( Joanne Woodward, Paul Newman's wife), has brought Harper to New Orleans because she has a job for him.
Synopsis. Harper is brought to Louisiana to investigate an attempted blackmail scheme. He soon finds out that it involves an old flame of his and her daughter. He eventually finds himself caught in a power struggle between the matriarch of the family and a greedy oil baron, who wants their property. Poor Harper!

Aug 11, 2007 · When this was first released at the cinema, many (including this writer) felt "The Drowning Pool" was inferior to the initial Lew Archer film: titled alternatively as "Harper" (see separate review) or "The Moving Target". The passage of time has, however, been kinder to "The Drowning Pool" than it has been to "Harper".

The Drowning Pool goes somewhat astray in its development, but the ends are nicely tied together at the climax. The hit song made popular by Helen Reddy in the seventies, Killing Me Softly With His Song, comes from The Drowning Pool. It was a mega hit back in the day and to my amazement I discovered it wasn't even nominated for an Oscar.
