  7. 1. The introduction does a great job of bringing the cloister to life, of making it and the chestnut tree seem ageless. A constant among the cycles of changing faces and seasons. The book isn't shy about assigning Narcissus special status, "a seemingly chosen" intellectual with a similar insight into the souls of others that Demian possessed.
