Shelby Township was surveyed and opened for general land sales in 1818. A township government was organized in 1827. The settlement of Disco at the crossroads of 24 Mile Road and Van Dyke Ave. began in the 1830s and was an active community. The 1928 Packard Proving Grounds complex, an engineering marvel, graces Van Dyke Ave.
