Permalink. 10/10. Brilliant performance by Laughton. bensonmum2 5 February 2005. For those unfamiliar, Island of Lost Souls (1933) is the earliest and easily the superior version of H.G. Wells' Dr. Moreau. This is a beautifully filmed movie that still supplies the creepy moments almost 70 years after being made.

It’s often cloaked in darkness, and director Eric C. Kenton ‘s flourishes with both uncomfortably close close-ups and crane shots are used to great effect.
