Henry Thomas Austen was born in 1771 in Steventon, Hampshire. He was the fourth son born to his parents, Rev. George Austen and Cassandra Leigh. He had five brothers; James (1765–1819), George (1766–1838), Edward (1768–1852), Francis William (Frank) (1774–1865), Charles John (1779–1852), and two younger sisters, Cassandra and Jane.
Nov 14, 2022 · April 1764 at St. Swithin's Church in Bath, Cassandra married the Reverend George Austen (q.v.), the vicar of Steventon in Hampshire. None of his family were present at the wedding, and the bride wore a red riding habit. They were to have eight children, of whom Jane was the seventh. Like his father-in-law before him, George Austen retired to Bath.

The Rev. George Austen and Cassandra Leigh, Jane Austen's parents, lived in Steventon, Hampshire, where Rev. Austen was the rector of the Anglican parish from 1765 until 1801. Jane Austen's immediate family was large and close-knit. She had six brothers—James, George, Charles, Francis, Henry, and Edward—and a beloved older sister, Cassandra.
Knowledge of George’s existence, however, remained absent from Austen scholarship for decades after Jane Austen’s death. Austen biographer David Nokes describes George as “excluded and forgotten” (525), and this characterization unfortunately appears to be the proper one when considering the facts of George’s life.
