    Alan Jay Pakula (1928-1998) was born in the Bronx, New York. The summer before entering Yale University in 1945 he served an apprenticeship with the Leland Hayward Theatrical Agency. After graduating from Yale in 1948 with a degree in drama, he moved to Hollywood with the intention of pursuing a career as a director.
