Cadillac is the second oldest automobile brand name in America (Buick is the oldest), and it comes from Antoine de la Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac (1658-1730), the French official who founded what became the city of Detroit, Michigan.

Of the minor Gascon nobility, he came to America in 1683 to seek his fortune and lived for a time at Port Royal (now Annapolis Royal, N.S.) and then on a grant of land in present-day Maine.
Detroit wouldn't begin to shape into its current form until roughly three centuries ago. That's when French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac landed on the banks of the Detroit River and established a fort in 1701. Nine years later he was removed from his post as outpost commander due to "ill conduct" (i.e. excessive lining of his own pockets).
