After attending classes at Chelsea Polytechnic, Williams enrolled for a term at the Central School in 1954 to learn etching, which he augmented by self-study and visits to the British Museum Print Room. He made over 100 etchings in London between 1954 and 1956; a major theme was the London music hall, focusing on the individual performers.
