In fall 2014, the FCS served 801,023 students (Florida Department of Education, n.d.a), making it the third largest community college system in the United States behind California and Texas (Ma & Baum, 2016).
In an effort to show that the state of Florida had a separate but equal college system for black people, counties, with state support, established 11 junior colleges for black people; only one already existed (Booker T. Washington).
