Mount Shasta ( / ˈʃæstə / SHASS-tə; Shasta: Waka-nunee-Tuki-wuki; [5] Karuk: Úytaahkoo) [6] is a potentially active [7] volcano at the southern end of the Cascade Range in Siskiyou County, California. At an elevation of 14,179 ft (4,322 m), it is the second-highest peak in the Cascades and the fifth-highest in the state.
The mountain is part of the Cascade Range and is within the Yakima River drainage basin. Precipitation runoff from the mountain drains west into headwaters of Gold Creek, or east into Glacier Lake. The mountain was named in the 1890s for brothers John, Tom, Vic, and Lawrie Denny, miners who lived in a cabin at the base of the four peaks.
