Julia Alvarez was elected to the National Members Council, PEN American Center, from 1997 to 1999 and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Hispanic Heritage Award (2002), the Vermont Arts Council's Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts (2011), and the National Medal of Arts (2014).
Julia Alvarez left the Dominican Republic for the United States in 1960 at the age of ten. She is the author of six novels, three books of nonfiction, three collections of poetry, and eleven books for children and young adults.
