Who we are. The Monterey Bay Aquarium launched Seafood Watch in 1999 as a special exhibit about the impacts of seafood. People found the information useful, so we made it a permanent conservation program. Our original mission was to help people navigate purchasing sustainable seafood through our seafood ratings and tools like our pocket guides.
Seafood Watch began as a Monterey Bay Aquarium special exhibit more than two decades ago. Now, we’re a leading source of science-based information for sustainable seafood around the world. And we have you to thank.

On March 1, 2021, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program released 128 updated sustainability ratings for tunas and large pelagic species, including some of the largest-volume and most valuable tuna species caught in the Atlantic Ocean, the Eastern Pacific Ocean, Hawaii and the Indian Ocean.
