Inside the side plate, not visible unless the gun is disassembled. For a Mark III the serial number will be numbers and a letter, either as a prefix or suffix.

If the SN is no longer visible then you may have an illegal frame according to BATFe. Avoid the temptation to replace everything on your brand-new 1911 just to make it "better".
Oct 7, 2022 · The gun they chose was a 1901 Colt SA .45 4 3/4 that was from a filmed.....on video customer. It had clusters of rust and a newer cylinder that was fitted. The (In shop repair) showed workers doing all the aspects in restoring the Colt useing files to work over the cylinder, frame, backstrap, and barrel. Stuff I have not seen before.
