Dec 5, 2013 · As a Marquette University student in 1979, Mark Denning arrived on campus as the school was moving toward a more dignified sports symbol, and away from the cartoonish "Willie Wampum" warrior mascot.
The Warriors mascot lost his job in 1971 after the Student Senate requested that the administration retire the Willie Wampum character. The Warriors nickname had been in place since 1954, but met the same fate as Willie for the same reasons in 1993, when Marquette's nickname was changed to Golden Eagles despite protests from students and alumni.
Oct 1, 2009 · For what it is worth, there is no NCAA-imposed impediment to a school calling its teams the “Warriors,” so long as the name is not coupled with a mascot posing as a native American. Had Marquette simply dropped its Native American mascot in the early 1990’s, there would have been no objection to its keeping the name Warriors.
