Austria’s Musical National Treasure In Austria “Stille Nacht” is considered a national treasure. Traditionally the song was not played publicly before Christmas Eve, and commercial use of the 205-year-old carol is still verboten. Today Austrians can and do sing the carol at any time, but public performances before 24 December are discouraged.
