Popular artists don’t mix produce or record with Reaper, that I can find. It seems straightforward enough to assume if you want to make professional music, you should use the tools that professionals use. As far as I can tell from google searching, Reaper is for bedroom producers (and BBC, lol). Pro tools and Ableton are for big name artists.

There are no consequences. The fact is if there was some kind of limitation, people would simply use cracked versions of Reaper. I used Reaper for quite a while without paying. But there comes a point where you just realise what a superb piece of software it is and how valuable developers like Cockos are.
But learning to use a DAW may come in handy if you want to record your playing and publish your music. If you've got money to burn then demo the DAWs and buy whatever you like if you're okay with the factory sounds. TBH, I haven't yet heard a DAW factory piano that I would use in a published song.
