Most infections are asymptomatic; clinical manifestations include amebic dysentery and extraintestinal disease. Extraintestinal manifestations include amebic liver abscess and other more rare manifestations such as pulmonary, cardiac, and brain involvement [ 1 ].
E. histolytica cysts can be detected in contaminated water by filtering a sample of 4 l or more through membrane filters with a pore size of 7–10 μm. After washing the filter with several millilitres of sterile distilled water into a small beaker, this concentrated sample can be examined directly by microscopy for the presence of cysts.
