Gilbert Strang is Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College. He was an undergraduate at MIT and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. His doctorate was from UCLA and since then he has taught at MIT.

Strang clearly has a depth of understanding about his topic. But he also clearly has a depth of experience as a professor, in his ability to stick with the shallow water for now, even if he sees much deeper water, everywhere he looks. I think your problem might be more with Attention than Prof. Strang. I feel the same.
