Solar storms frequently launch plasma and radiation into the Solar System. If an intense storm hit Earth, it could damage satellites, power grids, and communication networks.
The sun was literally life itself to people of the old ways. The sun, and our mapping of it (equinoxes, etc), became the organizing factor of human beings' lives for thousands of years; from the agricultural revolution in Mesopotamia to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution only recently. That's why I value the sun, anyway.
