Second Chance is an American body armor manufacturing company that was the first firm to use kevlar for body armor. The company was founded in the early 1970s by U.S. Marine and pizza delivery owner/driver Richard Davis. Davis developed the idea of a bulletproof vest after shooting three armed robbers in self-defense during a delivery.
Richard Davis grew up in Chicago, and was inspired by Jimmy Blanton to study the bass. While still a student, Davis played night gigs with Sun Ra--who gave Davis tips on how to avoid the draft. He played extensively with Sarah Vaughan and a host of other notable jazz artists. Eric Dolphy was a close friend and Davis played with him frequently.
Richard Davis, a world-renowned jazz bassist, educator, and social justice activist, passed away at the age of 93. He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for 39 years and played with notable artists such as Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra.
