Sep 1, 2020 · The Virginian was probably the most expensive show on TV when it debuted in the Fall of 1962. Each episode had a budget of about $350,000 (about $3 million today--if you could even make a show like this today), and was basically an attempt to create a good little Hollywood Western movie each week.

The Shiloh Ranch in Wyoming Territory of the 1890s is owned in sequence by Judge Henry Garth, the Grainger brothers, and Colonel Alan MacKenzie. It is the setting for a variety of stories, many more based on character and relationships than the usual western.

The Virginian. U.S. television's first ninety-minute western (including commercials). In the book, the ranch, which is actually named "Sunk Creek", is two hundred seventy miles from Medicine Bow. When the Virginian is promoted to foreman, he moves out of the bunkhouse to his own home on the ranch. The Virginian and Trampas are not friends.
