The Spanish crown encouraged Ponce de León to continue exploring. In March 1513 he and his crew set sail from Puerto Rico in search of the island of Bimini (in the Bahamas). In April he landed on Florida’s east coast, near what is now St. Augustine. He then sailed south around the peninsula and up the west coast to Charlotte Harbor.

But the Taíno force — with reinforcements from the Carib tribe — numbered in the thousands. In a late-night sneak attack, Juan Ponce de León's men killed around 150 Native Americans with zero casualties on their side.
