After replacing jazz, rock was the most popular genre of pop music. The 1950s had Elvis. 1960s had Rolling Stones. The 1970s had Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Black Sabbath. 1980s had Metallica, Bon Jovi, AC DC. 1990s had grunge bands like Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Early 2000s had Nu Metal.
As R&B and music / media in general has become increasingly fragmented, this is harder to find. As a result, they reach the conclusion that R&B is dead. But in reality, R&B is not dead, it simply sounds different from the 90s/00s, as with other genres. The sound of R&B, as with all other culturally relevant genres, has evolved over time.
