The Frying Pan is the most-used melee weapon. Melee weapons crit generally a lot (up to 60% chance depending on how much damage you've done in the last few seconds). When they crit, people take more notice of it than a normal hit. These facts combined mean that people notice Pan crits a lot. So it's part observation bias and part circlejerking.
