Inveraray Castle is a lovely well maintained property. The Castle is magnificent as are the grounds. We enjoyed learning more about the history of the Clan Campbell and various people and events hosted by them. The armament displays are amazing. It was so wonderful to be able to finally visit Scotland after so many delays due to Covid19.
Colin Mor Campbell was killed in 1296 and was succeeded by his son Sir Neil Campbell, companion and brother-in-law of King Robert the Bruce. Inveraray was altered in 1877-1878 following a fire, when the candle-snuffer roofs were added to the corner turrets, and the central tower was raised in the middle of the four square blocks. Often described as architecturally disappointing, the castle is nevertheless typical of its time.
