I called smith and wesson customer support, and they gave me the number for a place where I can order gun parts.
May 8, 2019 · I found the cylinder assembly parts (extractor rod, center pin, rod collar, rod spring and center pin spring) are identical for both guns. I swapped them around and sure enough, the 686-4 cylinder assembly closed and opened just fine in the 4” 686 frame. On the flip-side, the 4” cylinder assembly was hard to open in the 6” 686-4 frame.
