Whitney Portal Road. Discover this 23.6-mile out-and-back trail near Lone Pine, California. Generally considered a challenging route. This is a popular trail for camping, road biking, and scenic driving, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are June through November.
From Highway 395 in Lone Pine, CA, turn west (at the stoplight) onto Whitney Portal Road and go 12.5 miles to the campground. General Notes: Traveling in Bear Country. Historically, there has been a high level of bear activity in the Mt. Whitney area. A bear-proof locker is located at each site at Mt. Whitney Family Campground.
Begin at the junction of the JMT, Crabtree Meadow, or Guitar Lake. Once you reach Guitar Lake, you'll be above 11,000 feet. This is a popular spot to base camp before summiting Whitney. You'll climb to the intersection of the summit trail, continuing on to the highest point in the lower 48 states, or beginning the descent towards Whitney Portal.
